Places to visit

Right next to the Quinta da Moenda is a dam, where the river spreads itself and offers a beautiful perspective of the valley in the direction of the Serra da Estrela. In Alvôco das Várzeas (5 min. walk) it is compulsory to visit the Medieval bridge, classified as a national monument, over the Alvôco river that was constructed in the XIV century of the roman-gothic style.

The valleys of the Alva and Alvôco are enchanting. Small villages, like S.Gião with its "Cathedral of the Beiras", are a must.

Coimbra is a 1 hour drive and offers many historic attractions and modern amenities and is renowned as a centre for Fado, Portugal's traditional folk music.

White sandy beaches are a 1.5 hour drive at Figueira da Foz and Mira.

Visit the Spa town of Luso or Curia where the radioactive properties of the waters are used in the treatment of kidney complaints. The mineral water from Luso is one of the most popular in Portugal and people gather round the spring to collect it in water bottles.

Significant Roman ruins at Coimbra and Conimbriga and the spiritual site of Fatima are also within easy travelling distance.

 

Buçaco National Forest is a 250-acre walled forest in the Serra do Buçaco, once a religious haven, where a wide variety of mature trees grow and old shrines survive.

Almost every town has a weekly market.
